ArcelorMittal in Liberia: A Call for Ethical Reform and Social Responsibility
Workers Deserve Fair Wages and Safe Conditions
Behind every ton of iron ore exported, there are miners and laborers working under strenuous conditions, often without proper compensation or job security. Reports of workplace hazards, inadequate healthcare, and suppressed labor rights are unacceptable. If ArcelorMittal truly values Liberia’s contributions to its global supply chain, it must invest in the safety and wellbeing of its workforce, ensuring fair wages, healthcare access, and proper working conditions.
Communities Must Benefit from Corporate Presence
Liberia’s mineral wealth is not just for corporate profit—it belongs to its people. Yet, many communities near mining sites struggle with environmental degradation, displacement, and economic instability. Where are the infrastructure projects promised? Where is the investment in local schools, clinics, and sustainable development? ArcelorMittal has a moral obligation to ensure its operations uplift communities rather than exploit them.
Corruption Must End—Transparency Is Non-Negotiable
The influence of corporate money in political corridors must cease. Allegations of bribery for contract renewals, favoring government officials’ relatives in employment, and awarding contracts to senators responsible for mineral development reviews cannot go ignored. Corruption erodes trust, hinders national progress, and damages Liberia’s reputation. We call for immediate transparency in all dealings, independent oversight, and strict penalties for violations.
A Collective Demand for Change
Liberians cannot afford complacency. The government, civil society groups, and international watchdogs must unite to demand ethical reforms. Companies profiting from Liberia’s resources must give back, treat workers with dignity, and respect the nation's laws. This is not just about contracts and corporate agreements—it’s about the future of Liberia, its people, and the generations to come.
ArcelorMittal, it’s time to act. Your legacy in Liberia will be measured not by profit margins, but by the wellbeing of the workers and communities you impact. The people are watching. Will you rise to the occasion, or continue to exploit? The choice is yours. However, we are not deterred, and we will continue to use every available platform to push for change at ArcelorMittal until the rights and dignity of Liberians are respected.
